When this applies
- Documentation was never created or has been lost
- The part exists only as a physical object
- You have a sketch or concept, not engineering output
- You need someone to produce the definition as well as the part
What replaces a drawing
In descending order of usefulness: a physical sample, a 3D scan, a dimensioned sketch, photographs with a scale reference, and a written description. Most successful no-drawing projects combine at least two — a sample plus a written statement of what the part must do.
Expect a definition step in the quote
If no drawing exists, someone has to create one, and that effort belongs in the quote. Ask whether documentation is included, what you receive at the end, and whether you are free to use it with other suppliers later. Clarifying this up front avoids an unpleasant conversation at reorder time.
- Is a model or drawing delivered with the parts?
- Who owns it, and can you reuse it?
- Will a first article be measured against it?
Approve before you run
On no-drawing work, ask for a dimensioned drawing or model for approval before manufacture begins. It is the only point at which a misunderstanding costs nothing to fix.
RFQ checklist
Include these in your request and suppliers can quote without a round of questions.
- What you have: sample, sketch, photos or description
- Function of the part and how it mounts
- Any dimension that must be exact
- Quantity and target timing
- Whether you need documentation delivered
