When this applies
- The OEM no longer supplies the part or no longer exists
- Lead time quoted by the OEM is measured in months
- You hold a worn or broken original you can ship or scan
- You need one to a few pieces, not a production run
What a shop actually needs from you
A remake quote is only as good as the reference you provide. A physical sample is the strongest starting point — even a damaged one — because dimensions, material condition and wear patterns can all be measured directly. A legacy drawing is useful but should be treated as a starting point, not as verified truth; parts drift from their drawings over decades of revisions.
- The original part, or clear photos with a scale reference
- Any drawing, manual page or parts-list entry you have
- The equipment the part belongs to and its function
- Which surfaces are wear, sealing or mating faces
- Whether you need a like-for-like copy or an improvement
Copy exactly, or improve?
If the original failed early, copying it faithfully reproduces the failure. Tell the shop how the part failed and whether you are open to a different material, a harder facing or an added radius at a crack origin. Many obsolete-part remakes are quietly upgraded at no extra cost simply because the buyer mentioned the failure mode.
Cost and lead time drivers
Single-piece work is dominated by setup and programming, not by run time. Expect the first piece to carry the engineering effort; additional pieces from the same setup are usually far cheaper per unit. If the equipment will keep running for years, ordering a spare alongside the immediate replacement is nearly always the cheaper decision.
RFQ checklist
Include these in your request and suppliers can quote without a round of questions.
- Describe the machine and the part's function
- State quantity now, plus any spares you want quoted
- Note the material if known, or ask for a recommendation
- Flag critical fits, bores, threads and sealing surfaces
- Say whether you can ship the original or only photos
- Give a realistic need-by date and downtime impact
